Appeal for dashcam footage of hit and run at Islington

Newcastle Police are appealing for dashcam footage after a pedestrian was hit by a car in Islington last month.

On Saturday 23 October, a female was hit by a white SUV as she crossed the intersection of Maitland Road and Hubbard Street, where she sustained broken ribs due to the collision.

Police say the driver of the vehicle did not stop and made no attempt to render assistance or provide details.

Anyone with information or footage of the incident is being urged to contact Newcastle Police Station.

Police Move To Shut Down Bikie Clubhouse At Islington

Heavily armed police have raided the Nomad Bikie Gang clubhouse at Islington.

The Herald reports officers stormed the Chinchen Street clubhouse at about 7.00pm on Monday after the Supreme Court declared it a restricted premises, giving police the power to enter the property at any time.

It also means anyone with a criminal conviction who meets there can be charged.

Police believe it will spell the end of the Nomads clubhouse.

It comes as a bike turf war seems to have reignited, with police saying a drive-by shooting at Gillieston Heights last week appears to be a payback attack.

Man Off to Newcastle Court after a Breaking into an Islington Home

A man has been charged after an alleged break and enter in Islington overnight.

Police say at about 1am a man broke into a home in Anderton Street and stole a handbag, wallet, car keys and Nissan Navara 4WD which was parked outside.

Officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command commenced an investigation and found the vehicle on Young Road, Broadmeadow.

The 33-year-old almost escaped the clutches of police after a short foot pursuit nearby.

He's been charged with aggravated break and enter, take and drive conveyance, goods in custody, and breach of bail. He was also refused bail.

The man faces Newcastle Local Court today.

Crime Scene Set up in Islington After Suspicious Fire

Newcastle Police have set up a crime scene at a home in Islington after a fire overnight.

Fire crews were called to the home on Chin Chen Street just after 3am to reports of a fire.

There was no damage to the property after a number of Molotov cocktails at the home - the occupant was awoken by an unknown noise outside and quickly realised what was happening extinguishing the small blaze which had started.

No one was injured.

Police are treating the incident as suspicious - the premises may be linked to a local bikie gang.

Man To Face Court Over Islington Axe Attack

A man's been arrested over a violent axe attack at Islington.

The 44-year-old is accused of smashing the drivers-side window, windscreen and roof of a green Toyota Camry parked outside a pub in George Street just before 5.00pm yesterday.

It further alleged he struck the driver of the Camry in the face with the axe handle before driving off in his ute.

The 30-year-old driver was taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment of facial injuries.

Highway Patrol Officers stopped his car on Lambton Road, New Lambton last night - he's been granted conditional bail to front Newcastle Local Court on August 31.

Police say it appears the accused, who was parked behind behind the Camry, became angry after the driver left the hotel and got into his car but didn't leave immediately.

Price of Petrol set to drop in Newcastle

Petrol prices are set to drop below a $1 dollar per litre in coming weeks across Newcastle according to the NRMA

Service stations around Newcastle could be seen selling e10 petrol for around 101 cents per litre on Wednesday but prices are set to drop even further due to a decrease in crude oil prices and a rise in the Australian dollar.

NRMA chairman, Kyle Loades, says motorists can be the beneficiaries of cheaper fuel in the coming weeks due to a number of factors.

"Petrol pricing over the last week has dropped by about 15 cents per litre on the back of international crude oil pricing coming down and the Aussie dollar rising meaning the pump price has reduced which is great news for motorists," Loades stated.

If the prices were to drop lower than a dollar per litre it would be the first time since early 2016.

NRMA also predict the more competition of service stations in an area, odds are that you will find cheaper fuel.

"Good examples are Charlestown and Islington where there are two or three service stations, other areas where there are also two or three is where you should shop if you simply go to one location which is isolated odds are it will be more expensive."

The price of fuel will go lower than the dollar value but won't go much lower than that so motorists should take advantage of the lower prices now.

Jesmond man accused of glassing another man

A Jesmond man will face court next week after a violent brawl at Islington over the weekend.

The 25-year-old man is accused of attacking a 24-year-old man with a glass bottle outside a unit block in Millford Street at about 3am yesterday.

The alleged victim suffered a laceration under his eye and bruises to the face.

The accused has since been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and will face court June 16.

Tyre Slashing Spree Around Newcastle's Inner Suburbs

 The search is on for the culprit or culprits responsible for slashing dozens of tyres in Newcastle's inner suburbs over the past few weeks.

It's believed more than 120 tyres have been damaged in Mayfield, Islington and Tighes Hill, with some residents having their tyres repaired only to be hit again, costing them hundreds of dollars.

Some residents have restorted to having their cars garaged in other suburbs, well away from their home in a bid to avoid further attacks.

Police are urging the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour.

  

Coal Dust survey shows support for covered wagons

The Coal Dust Free Streets project survey has revealed only 20-percent of residents in Islington, Mayfield, Stockton and Tighes Hill are in support of plans for a fourth uncovered coal terminal in the area.

The partnership between the Hunter Community Environment Centre and resident groups aims to strengthen networks to call for improved air quality and health.

Hunter Community Environment Centre community organiser ZANE ALCORN says the survey also showed an overwhelming support for improving dust control measures.

"It was pretty resounding results, we door-knocked 1,270 people, in Stockton, Tighes Hill, Islington and Mayfield, and we've shown that 90% of people want to see coal wagons covered and regularly washed to prevent dust pollution. They also want to see the coal stockpiled covered and all stages of loading and unloading covered," Mr Alcorn said.
