Man Charged Over Large Jewellery Theft At Charlestown

BY IAN CROUCH

Police believe they've caught the person responsible for stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewellery from a Charlestown jewellery store.

Police say a man entered the Michael Hill Jewellery Store in Charlestown Square during business hours on Sunday September 24, grabbing  a display board of rings valued at more than $60,000 before running off.

Following extensive inquiries, about 2.50pm yesterday (Thursday 12 October 2017), police attended an address on Mcelwee Drive, Tingera Heights, where they arrested a 25-year-old man, who was also allegedly in breach of an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order at the time.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with larceny greater than $15,000; intimidation (x2); armed with intent; stealing, armed to avoid apprehension; and breach AVO.

He's been refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court today (Friday 13 October 2017).

Police say the rings have not yet been recovered.
