All Saints' College Maitland Teacher Charged With Sex Offences

A teacher at a Maitland Catholic school will face court at the end of the month accused of having sex with a student.

Police have confirmed the 39-year-old man has been charged with nine counts of sexual intercourse with a person under his care aged between 17 and 18.

The teacher from All Saints' College Maitland's senior campus has been released on bail to face Maitland Local Court on April 26.

A second teacher at the school is also being investigated for allegations of serious misconduct and was put on administrative leave in March.

Maitland Grossman High School Teacher Convicted of Common Assault, Despite Remorse

The high school teacher from Maitland captured on video in a brawl with a student has learned his fate. 

A court heard 62-year-old Michael John Kable, had shown genuine remorse after admitting to the assault of a boy at Maitland Grossman High School on the 21st of March this year.

Presiding Magistrate Ron Maiden said he accepted Mr. Kable has been taunted by his class, was remorseful, and was unlikely to re-offend, but believed a conviction was warranted. 

He's been formally convicted of common assault and placed on an 18-month community corrections order. 

Ron Maiden said he believed it would be difficult for Mr. Kable to find another teaching job after the conviction, where Working with Children Checks were needed.

Students Rally Behind Maitland Teacher Charged with Assault

Students rallied in support of a Maitland Grossman High School teacher as he arrived at court today. 

62-year-old Michael Kable is charged with common assault, after police were called to the school on the 21st of March, on reports a student had allegedly been struck by a male teacher.

Supporters say Mr Kable was pushed to his limit and was regularly subject to taunting and abuse from students. 

His matter has been adjourned to the 27th of April while he seeks further legal advice.

Maitland Teacher Charged After Alleged Classroom Brawl

Investigations are now underway, after a fight broke-out between a teacher and his students at Maitland yesterday.

Police were called to Maitland Grossman High School at about 2:00pm yesterday, following an alleged classroom brawl between a teacher and multiple pupils.

Smartphone footage of the event shows a physical altercation where punches were thrown and a table was launched at the teacher. 

A teenage boy who was dealt multiple blows was assessed and deemed uninjured. 

Police have confirmed this morning, the teacher has been charged over the alleged assault.

The Department of Education is investigating.

Catholic teachers bring billboards to the Hunter in staff shortage campaign

Catholic teachers are ramping up their industrial campaign in the Hunter on Monday, to address pay, conditions, and staff shortages in the sector.

The Independent Education Union is bringing its mobile billboard truck to St Francis Xavier's College in Hamilton from 1:45pm to 2:15pm, before heading to the Catholic Schools Office in Newcastle West at 2:30pm.

NSW ACT Secretary Mark Northam says they're calling on diocese employers and the State Government to respond.

"What we're trying to do is to really get the public onside and get our message across to the public in a reasonable way," he said. "But also to signal to our teachers and our support staff and our principals in the Independent Education Union, that the campaign is a serious campaign and it's reached a serious level."

"We have the perfect storm. There's more students coming into schools for the next decade or so, about a 10 percent increase in students, and at the same time, there's plummeting levels of people who are enrolling in education at universities, and sadly, it's got about a 50 percent attrition rate once they're in the course."

Over the coming week, the truck's set to continue north to Port Macquarie, before heading inland to Armidale and Tamworth, and returning to Singleton and Maitland.
