Man Arrested After Early-Morning Standoff at Tenambit

 A 49-year-old man is in Police custody following a stand-off at Tenambit early today (Wednesday 11 February 2026).

Officers were called an address in O'Hearn Street at about 4.00am to reports of alleged AVO breaches.

Police say the man barricaded himself inside the home and refused to leave.

Specialist officers were called in and the man surrendered without incident about two hours later.

He's expected to be charged with allegedly breaching two AVOS, breach of bail and charges relating to this morning's incident.

BREAKING! 10 Hour Stand-Off Ends At Mayfield West

A 10 hour stand-off with police at Mayfield West has ended with a man taken into custody.

Police say officers were called to reports of a concern for welfare at a unit complex on Burunda Street at about 4.30pm on Wednesday October 1, 2025.

It's understood a man had barricaded himself inside the unit and was threatening himself and anyone who approached.

Police say the siege ended at 2.30am on Thursday, with police forcing entry to the unit.

The man was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

BREAKING! Man Arrested After Siege At Jesmond Shopping Centre

A dramatic siege at a Jesmond shopping centre has ended with the arrest a man.

Police say just before 10.00pm last night (Tuesday 5 August, 2025), staff at the Woolworths in Jesmond Central on Blue Gum Road alerted police and evacuated the store when a man told them he was carrying a bomb in a bag and threatening to set it off.

Dozens of police, ambulances and fire crews were dispatched to scene including specialist negotiators and officers from the Tactical Operations Unit from Sydney.

The 36-year-old Newcastle man eventually surrendered to police at about 4.30am on Wednesday.

He was taken to Waratah Police Station and is expected to face Newcastle Local Court today.

Police say the bag he was carrying contained remote controls and no bomb was found after a thorough sweep of the store.

Unit Destroyed During Alleged Siege At Thornton

A man has been taken to hospital following a siege and fire at Thornton this morning.

Police were called to a unit in Government Road just after 6.30am today (Friday 25 July, 2025) to a concern for welfare report.

Police say a man was holed up inside the unit. 

Fire crews were also called to reports of a gas leak at the scene.

Police say the incident ended with the man safely taken into custody at about 9.00am when the unit was allegedly set on fire.

Crews took about an hour to extinguish the fire which gutted the unit.

6 Hour Standoff Ends With Arrest Of A Man At Mayfield

A man is due to front court today (Monday 24 March, 2025) charged with domestic violence offences following an alleged stand-off with police at Mayfield.

Emergency services were called to a unit complex in Woodbine Street just before 11.00am on Sunday following reports of a domestic violence incident.

Police were told a 66-year-old woman had been assaulted by a man known to her.

It's further alleged he threatened police who tried to arrest him.

Specialist tactical police, paramedics and firefighters were called in to assist and residents of the unit bloc were evacuated as a precaution.

Around 5.15pm, a 30-year-old man left the unit and was arrested without incident.

He's been charged with four offences and refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court today.

UPDATE! Man Arrested After 8 Hour Siege At Bar Beach

A man has been taken into custody after an eight hour siege at Bar Beach.

Police say officers went to speak to the man at a Housing Commission unit complex in Light Street at about 6.00pm on Thursday about an alleged break and enter in Hunter Street earlier this year.

However, the 48-year-old man allegedly barricaded himself inside the unit and refused to surrender while make threats to police.

Officers from the Tactical Response Group and specialist negotiators were brought in.

Police say a 55-year-old man who's a friend of the person of interest was also inside the unit. They called on him to leave the premises of his own volition, but he refused

Police forced entry to the unit at about 2 o'clock on Friday morning and arrested the wanted man without incident.

He's been refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court today.

Police say no charges are pending against the 55-year-old man. 

Meanwhile, firefighters were called to the same Light Street units just before 4.30am on Friday where a washing machine was on fire in a shared laundry.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire before handing the scene over to police.

They are examining possible links to the earlier incident.

Five Hour Siege Ends With Woman's Arrest At Mayfield

A woman has been taken into custody after a five hour siege at Mayfield overnight.

Ambulance paramedics were called to a home on Bull Street just after midnight on Tuesday to reports a woman was having a psychotic episode while under the influence of the drug ICE.

Police were called when the 22-year-old became abusive and allegedly produced a knife.

The woman was eventually arrested just before 5.30am on Tuesday.

She's been taken to Newcastle Police Station and is expected to be charged with using a weapon to avoid apprehension.

Man To Face Court Over Siege At Maryland

It's been revealed the man at the centre of a siege at Maryland tried to live stream the incident on Facebook.

New Limited reports police acted quickly with the social media giant to take down the live stream from the internet.

A 30-year-old man is due to face Newcastle Local Court today (Friday 3 July 2020) accused of a string of offences including shooting at police with a paintball gun, causing superficial injuries to a sergeant and constable.

Heavily armed police Police surrounded a home on Warkworth Street at about 9.30am on Thursday and were allegedly confronted by the man armed with a knife while two women and two children were inside.

He eventually surrendered about two hours later.

Siege Ends Peacefully At Mount Hutton

A siege at Mount Hutton has ended peacefully with a man surrendering to police.

Police say the 31-year-old called officers to his home in Warners Bay Road at about 11.00am on Monday.

They arrived to find him on the roof and refusing to come down.

Officers negotiated with him for more than three hours before he surrendered without incident.

He was taken to the Psychiatric Care Unit at the Calvary Mater Hospital for treatment.
