 BY IAN CROUCH

A search will resume at 8 o'clock on Monday morning for a man missing in the water off Stockton Beach.

At about 3.00pm om Sunday emergency services were called after a number of swimmers were in difficulty.

Three were rescued from the water, however one man couldn't be located.

One of the swimmers was taken to hospital as a precaution - the others were not injured.

Police, surf lifesavers and the Hunter's Westpac Rescue Helicopter searched the water and surrounding beaches until the search was called off for the day at 7.00pm.

Man "Sheepish" And "Remorseful" After Midnight Swim Sparks Search on Newcastle Harbour

 BY IAN CROUCH

Police have described a midnight swim in Newcastle Harbour which sparked a major search as a foolish act.

The Hunter's Westpac Rescue Helicopter along with police, ambulance paramedics and Marine Rescue personnel were called in after the man was seen diving in the water off Queens Wharf just before midnight on Saturday and didn't resurface.

The helicopter crew conducted a visual search for more than an hour using night vision goggles.

The man was eventually found safe inside his Stockton home, completely unaware of the massive search effort.

Police say he was sheepish and remorseful - they suspect alcohol may have played a part in his decision.
