Hamilton North Gas Works Takes Another Step Towards Remediation

BY IAN CROUCH

Work looks like finally getting under way to remediate the highly contaminated former gasworks site at Hamilton North.

A hoarding has been erected around the Chatham Street site where the Australian Gas Light Company operated between 1913 and 1985.

Gas distributor, Jemena now owns the site and plans rehabilitate and concrete cap the land so it can be used for commercial and industrial purposes.

An analysis of the soil on the site revealed a cocktail of potentially carcinogenic compounds including benzene, ammonia and lead.
