Two Men Arrested At Gateshead Pub, and Fire Arm Seized

Police have charged a man after he was allegedly found to be in possession of a firearm in Lake Macquarie on Thursday. 

Shortly before 12pm , officers observed a grey Volkswagen Golf allegedly accelerating away from police on Honeysuckle Drive, Newcastle.

A short time later, police located the car at a carpark of a licensed premises on the Pacific Highway, Gateshead, with a female passenger inside.

During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly located a sawn-off firearm that was wrapped in clothing and a plastic bag containing ammunition.

The items were seized for forensic examination.

Following further inquiries, two men – aged 24 and 32 – were arrested inside the venue and taken to Belmont Police Station. 

The 24-year-old was charged with seven offences including:

  • Possess unauthorised prohibited firearm;
  • Possess unregistered firearm-prohibited firearm;
  • Possess loaded firearm public place;
  • Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority;
  • Possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority;
  • Not keep firearm safe; and
  • Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.

The 32-year-old was charged with a breach of bail offence.

Both men were refused bail to appear at Belmont Local Court on Friday. 

Investigations are ongoing, anyone who may have witnessed a grey Volkswagen Golf between 11am and 12.30pm in the Newcastle area or who may have dashcam footage from the nearby area during these times is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Man Facing Court After Ammunition Allegedly Found At East Maitland

A man is due to front court on ammunition charges after a dramatic arrest at East Maitland overnight.

Police went to home on Blackett Close at about 9.30pm on Sunday to speak to a man wanted over a break and enter at Wickham in November last year.

A 35-year-old man ran from the house when they arrived - he was arrested after a short foot pursuit on Mitchell Drive.

It's alleged a search of the area uncovered a black satchel bag containing 40 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition, a spent shell casing and three air rifle pellets.

He's been refused bail to due to face Maitland Local Court today (Monday 24 August 2020) charged with possessing ammunition without a licence and special aggravated break and enter with intent to commit serious indictable offence.

Military Grade Smoke Grenade And Flare Found At Belmont South

Lake Macquarie police are investigating the discovery of a military grade smoke grenade and a flare at Belmont South.

Officers were called to an address on the Pacific Highway at about 9.00pm on Wednesday.

The Police Rescue Squad was also called to the scene and rendered the devices safe before taking them to safe storage.

A quantity of 12 gauge shotgun ammunition was also found.

No charges have been laid at this stage and inquiries are continuing.
