Hunter GPs Call For Better Medicare Subsidies

There are calls for the Federal Government to provide better medical subsidies for Hunter locals visiting a GP.

The Royal Australian College of GPs says it's proposed a plan which would halve out of pocket costs, from the average of $59 to $25.

It comes after a report found there are no bulk billed clinics across the Newcastle, Shortland and Lyne electorates.

Hunter GPs association president Dr Fiona Van Leeuwen says it's an urgent problem.

"Government rebates are really insufficient and people are being required to live on very little money," she said.

"It doesn't seem right that the Medicare rebate is the same for every person if you're on a pension or a healthcare card you can have the same Medicare rebate as somebody who's working full time."

Hunter Drivers Win Cash Prizes by Spotting 'Joe Rider' This Week

As part of Motorcycle Awareness Month, Hunter motorists are being encouraged to spot ‘Joe Rider’ and report their sightings for the chance to win a daily gift voucher.

The initiative is running up until October 23, with Cessnock, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Port Stephens, Singleton and Upper Hunter Councils joining forces as part of Motorcycle Awareness Month.

Port Stephens Council Road Safety and Traffic Officer Lisa Lovegrove says the Joe Rider campaign aims to develop new habits — encouraging drivers to look out for motorcyclists.

“Motorcyclists are more exposed than any other vehicles on our roads."

“We’re asking drivers to be more aware and develop new habits by checking their blind spots and mirrors, and being cautious at intersections.

“It’s all part of our aim to promote rider safety, reduce the incidences of ‘sorry mate I didn’t see you’ (SMIDSY) accidents and make riders more visible on our roads.

Motorists who spot the riders wearing the Joe Rider vest, are being urged to report sightings when they reach their destination, for the chance to win a $50 voucher each day.

“By helping spot Joe Rider, you’re helping motorcyclists ride to live,” Ms Lovegrove said.
