BREAKING! Pets Tragically Killed In House Fire At Millfield

Firefighters have battled for several hours to extinguish a fierce house fire at Millfield overnight.

Crews were called to the single level home on Eleventh Avenue just after 11.00pm on Tuesday to find the house up in flames.

Newcastle Fire Command says a the house was unoccupied at the time although there were several animals at the property, many of whom were saved but it's feared others may have perished in the blaze .

More than 30 firefighters and RFS crews worked through the night to extinguish the fire, which was hampered by a large amount items which had been hoarded at the home.

Crew wrapped up firefighting efforts just after 4.30am on Wednesday - two crews will remain on patrol at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and will be subject to an investigation.
