Supporters of Newcastle's Tower Cinemas in King Street are furious after it was quietly sold off.
A half-yearly results presentation by Event Cinemas late last month revealed the cinema was listed among a number of non-core assets which have been sold.
Tower Cinemas closed in 2018, prompting a community campaign to re-open the venue as independent cinema showcasing art house and main stream films not released through the major cinema chains.
Event Cinemas did not respond to a petition of 7,000 signatures and a request to address a public meeting in June 2019.
Save The Tower campaigner, Sinead Francis-Coan says many people are shocked at the decision and the lack of public communication by the company about its plans.
"At every step of the way I have attempted to communicate directly with Event Cinemas. I sent them the petition and an open letter and invited them to address a public meeting held in June 2019 which was declined. Given the interest we have expressed it was highly disappointing to learn the news from an online news report," she said.
