CESSNOCK COUNCIL – Call for Further Review Before Rate Rise

An independent Cessnock Councillor believes the answer to rising costs is for Council to reduce its scope, instead of passing on a rate rise.

A review, led by Professor Joseph Drew, found rates hadn’t kept pace with standard inflation, and Council can’t meet its existing service delivery without an increase.

Councillors will meet tonight to consider applying to the independent regulator for an increase.

Councillor Quintin King says Council should be doing less.

“I still believe that there’s more that Council can do ourselves first before we put our hand out to the ratepayers,” he said.

“Every household in our community has to make sacrifices and sometimes go without things to be able to live within their means, which is what I think Council should do.

“As an example, we’re building a lot of new footpaths, which is great in some areas, but I don’t think it’s always necessary,” he said.

Call to Preserve Walka Water Works Amid Chimney Fears

In a motion raised by Councillor Warrick Penfold, Maitland Council will tonight consider writing to Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison about the deteriorating state of the Walka Water Works.

There’s concern about the structural integrity of the chimney after locals noticed a number of missing bricks.

Chair of the Save Walka Reserve Community Alliance Michele Keith says without funding, the region could lose a valuable landmark.

“There’s been another four bricks that have come out in recent months, which is quite concerning, because how many bricks need to come out before the chimney will collapse?” she said.

“We were hopeful after our meetings [with the State Government], but nothing has come from it.

“Council put in a grant submission back in February this year. That grant hasn’t been forthcoming and that would have been the funding to fix the chimney.

“Walka and Maitland Gaol are our two major tourist attractions and they’re both shut, with no end in sight as to when they’re going to reopen,” she said.

Fire crews have been called to a house fire at One Mile.

Newcastle Fire Command says they received several triple zero calls to the single level brick and tin roof home in Reflections Drive just after 5.45am.

Callers have reporting several loud explosions coming from the garage of the home which is believed to be unoccupied.

Crews arrived just after 6 o'clock to find the home up in flames.

However, fire crews were forced to suspend firefighting operations due to electrical dangers

A Fire and Rescue firefighter suffered a minor electric shock when he directed a hose to the roof of the house, which has live solar panels attached.

The firefighter is being taken to hospital for observation as a precaution.

With workers from the energy company travelling from Wallsend, firefighters have resumed defensive firefighting from the ground.

They managed to have the flames knocked down by about 7.15am.

KINGS HILL DEVELOPMENT – Former MP Slams “Ridiculous” Delay

Former Port Stephens Mayor and MP Craig Baumann says the Kings Hill development near Grahamstown Dam is long overdue.

The land, then for 4,500 homes was rezoned in 2010, but has been turned down by the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel, who later rejected an appeal in January over storm water and road works.

Councillor Giacomo Arnott is preparing a notice of motion to look at other options for future development.

But Craig Baumann believes the updated application for 2,500 homes should go ahead.

“It’s critical for the growth of Raymond Terrace, and Medowie High School has just commenced without the additional population and demand on Irrawang High School and Hunter River High.

“I’m not quite sure how [Medowie High School] will survive,” he said.

“If another 12,000 people moved into Raymond Terrace, the shops would benefit. The commercial centre would increase in size to everybody’s benefit,” he said.

“A Step in the Right Direction” Tabitha Acret on DV Reforms

The State Government will today introduce legislation to increase the minimum non-parole period in cases of intimate partner homicide following a campaign by Newcastle mother Tabitha Acret.

Her daughter Mackenzie Anderson was brutally murdered by her ex-partner in 2022 and he was subsequently sentenced to a minimum non-parole gaol term of 15 years.

If you or someone you know needs help:

1800RESPECT: 1800 737 732

Lifeline: 13 11 14

It’s a sentence the Crown had unsuccessfully argued was “manifestly inadequate.”

The Government wants to increase the minimum term for anyone who murders their current or ex-partner to 25 years.

Tabitha Acret says it’s been a long fight.

“I thought I’d still be knocking on doors for a long time. So very, very impressed that the NSW Government has taken on recommendations.

“This won’t solve everything but it’s a step in the right direction,” she said.

She says the shorter sentence given to killer Tyrone Thompson could be referenced in other cases.

“To know that that case became case law and could be used to help other violent offenders have lighter sentences was just another layer of trauma in everything that had already happened.

“But to know now that this can be part of her legacy to see a change in legislation is something that really helps.

“[The Government has] made some really great changes, but as a community we’re really going to have to work together.

This change in legislation falls under tertiary prevention, and while tertiary prevention is an important piece of the puzzle, primary prevention is the most important piece of the puzzle and it’s multi-layered and very complex,” she said.

Mayors Head to Sydney to Advocate for Hunter Region Deal

Hunter Mayors say they’re in Sydney to push for a Newcastle Airport freight precinct including $49 million for cargo infrastructure, and a Hunter Region Deal for jobs, similar to that made for Western Sydney.

The Hunter Joint Organisation is a coalition of Councils also asking for better roads funding to support a booming population, projected to reach over one million people in coming decades.

They’ll meet with the Premier and senior ministers in coming days.

Deputy Chair and Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson says the airport can be a strong economic driver.

“The fact we’ve now delivered an international terminal, we’re now looking for support from all levels of government,” she said.

With the Hunter’s population expected to reach over a million people in coming decades, they’re also asking for more infrastructure support.

“We know that we need to unlock housing, but with that [comes] the headache of how do we get the funding that we need to be able to provide the infrastructure?” Cr Anderson said.

“We get a certain amount of funding from developer contributions, but it’s certainly not enough when it comes to large scale infrastructure solutions that we’ll need,” she said.

MAITLAND – Council Welcomes Rail Plans

Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold says Council is welcoming plans to investigate electrification of the Hunter Line and new stations.

The recently released Hunter Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan will also further investigate potential for a train to Cessnock.

But the plan’s come under fire for only looking ahead 20 years and not providing further promises for Maitland’s road network around Thornton and Chisholm.

Philip Penfold says he’d welcome new stations north of Maitland’s centre.

“There’s been a conversation in the past about potential train stations at Oakhampton to provide for the community at Aberglasslyn and beyond. That would be certainly welcome.

“But we need a strategy that is even more than these 20 years, at least to talk to a longer period and at least to actually make proper funding commitments,” he said.

“The New England Highway is a key element as well, as we continue to provide housing across the city from in the east at Chisholm, out to Lochinvar and in between. The New England Highway continues to feel that strain,” he said.

Fire and Rescue Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell told the crowd it will help the local crew better serve their community.

“This is an area that’s changing, and we’ll continue to adapt and change and provide the service the community needs.

“We’ve invested $800,000 to provide contemporary facilities … setting it up for the 40 years ahead,” he said.

STOCKTON – State Govt Funding for Dune Stabilisation

The State Government will provide $260,001 for sand scraping and dune support works and at Stockton Beach.

The funding will be provided on a two-for-one basis, with Newcastle Council contributing $130,000.

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp says it’s a good stop-gap in a complex project.

“We’ve also got the $21.5 million that’s just been allocated in the last budget from the NSW Government to get the mass sand nourishment.

“But we’ve got a lot of work to do before that actually comes onto Stockton Beach and in the interim this is a great solution,” he said.

Stockton Community Liaison Group’s Ron Boyd says it will allow the community to enjoy the beach this summer.

“All these beach scraping events over the past two years or so have maintained that berm and the dunes along the edge. And so it’s actually been quite effective in the short term in protecting the beach.

“Council’s had quite a few consultants look at that and what we’ve decided is that beach nourishment is the answer to this. We don’t want any more structures,” he said.

NEWCASTLE AIRPORT – Direct Flights to Tasmania Announced

Newcastle Airport has announced a seasonal flight to Hobart, Tasmania. The service will begin on the 2nd of December and run 3 times a week until late April of next year.

The Airport will also be sponsoring a Tasmanian Devil, dubbed “Newy”, as part of the project.

Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton says its exciting to provide a direct connection.

“It’s a seasonal route, but that gives us capacity for about 22,000 passengers to go back and forth between Newcastle and Hobart, which is great,” he said.

“For the region, we’re adding more connections for people to the places that matter to them; there’s such a strong demand from the Hunter going to Tasmania during the summer.

“It’ll give the region more travel choice, supporting the Hunter economy and [create] new opportunities,” he said.

GLENDALE – Map Mix Up? Train Station Marked on Transport Plan

A map mix up in the Hunter Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan is drawing attention to calls for a train station at Glendale.

The plan announced by the State Government last week identifies Glendale as a future transport destination, but the map appears to mistakenly mark railway next to the shopping centre between Cardiff and Cockle Creek as an existing station.

The map also appears to include Civic and Newcastle stations, which were cut over ten years ago before the introduction of light rail on Hunter Street.

Plans for a Glendale station have been talked of for decades, most recently floated in 2019 amid talk of a Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange, but by 2021 Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said it was “flogging a dead horse”.

We asked Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison’s office about the maps. We were told the plan does not contain concrete commitments but strategic direction, and does generally flag Glendale as a focus area for better service provision.

Hunter Housing Industry Welcomes Home Deposit Reforms

The Housing Industry Association says new Federal reforms to home deposits will open up access to the market and drive up demand.

The Federal Government this week announced first home buyers of all income levels can now purchase a home with only a 5% deposit. In the event of a default, the Government will step in.

But there’s criticism the scheme will inflate property prices.

The Association’s Hunter Executive Director Craig Jennion says he’s not concerned.

“You need to understand the difference between the real estate market and the housing market and they are very much linked,” he said.

“The key is that in the very short term, yes, we will see a slight increase as there are more people out purchasing homes.

“But the great news is that over time we’ll actually see an increase in supply and as a result we’ll see prices stabilise and hopefully actually start to fall,” he said.

Permanent 2005 Bali Bombings Memorial to be Built as 20th Anniversary Commemorated

Australia’s Foreign Minister says the bond between the nation and Indonesia is stronger than ever, as a ceremony near Bar Beach will tonight mark the 20 year anniversary of the 2005 Bali Bombings.

The terrorist attack claimed the lives of four Australians, including Newcastle couple Colin and Fiona Zwolinski.

Penny Wong says it’s a difficult day for many.

“In honour of the victims, survivors and all those whose lives were forever changed by the attacks, the Australian Government will fund a new, permanent memorial in Australia to commemorate the 2005 Bali Bombings,” she said in a statement.

“Plans for the memorial will be developed in close consultation with survivors, and families of the victims,” she said.

Special Envoy for Indian Ocean Affairs Tim Watts says the memorial will pay tribute to the ongoing pain and courage of all those affected.

“While these tragic attacks occurred 20 years ago, they are not historic events of the past, and their legacy is still being lived today by everyone involved,” he said.

State Govt Announces Registrations for Farm Firefighting Vehicles

Farmers say new State Government registration rules will allow their firefighting utes to use public roads while covered by insurance.

The new rules are lenient compared with standard registration. Critical components such as brakes and steering will need to be compliant.

Mike Gilder is a farmer and Rural Fire Service member at Merriwa. He says it’ll allow farmers to assist the RFS.

“Its great, it’ll allow a lot of farmers to bring in their equipment to fires quicker, maybe faster response from some of fire trucks and keeping the fire small, that’s the most important thing,” he said.

“The farmer fire units go to the fires anyway, but [previously] they’ve been going illegally,” he said.

Mike Gilder

Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison says the reforms have been needed since the Black Summer Bushfires.

“I can’t express how much it impacted me in 2019-2020 being on the fire grounds, I was there.

“This really puts the power back in the community’s hands to help each other and we know in trauma informed response[s], if people have power to help their own response they often recover more quickly,” she said.

Woman Allegedly Involved In Dangerous Pursuit Through Southern Lake Macquarie With 10-Month-Old Baby In Car

 BY IAN CROUCH

Police say a woman had a 10-month-old baby in her car during a dangerous pursuit from the Central Coast to Swansea.

Just after midday yesterday (Tuesday 30 September, 2025), officers attempted to stop a Volkswagen sedan on the M1 at Somersby and initiated a pursuit when the car failed to stop.

They terminated the chase at the Tuggerah interchange, with the car involved in a crash before continuing north.

Calls for Telco Tower Maintenance Mandate

There are calls for telecommunications companies to be held responsible for maintaining reception towers in regional Australia and the Hunter.

The Nationals say one tower towns are at risk of losing connection to emergency services if infrastructure isn’t properly maintained.

It follows fallout from Optus outages, most recently in the Illawarra.

Nationals leader David Littleproud says the Federal Government should reform existing laws to make telcos look after their equipment.

“At the moment, the universal service obligation, where $270 million is put into every year, only goes to landlines and payphones,” he said.

“Why wouldn’t we re-cut the money into something that could save lives and make Australia more productive in making sure these telcos maintain these towers?

“The reality is, unless we force these telcos into maintaining towers, we potentially could see another Optus disaster like we saw on the weekend,” he said.

Coalition Slams Labor Over Education Spending

The State Opposition is defending its decision to not fund Medowie High School which began construction works last week.

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington says she has fought for the school for years in opposition, and claims the Coalition did not come good on a promise to build it in Government.

But Shadow Education Minister Sarah Mitchell says she funded a number of upgrades while in opposition.

“We went based on the advice that we were getting from the Department and also in relation to community growth.

“The decision was made to actually make those significant investments in Hunter River High School and in Irrawang High School, which I note [Port Stephens MP] Kate Washington was happy to open those projects and take credit for,” she said.

“I think it’s a bit rich for the Government to continue to blame the previous Government. They’ve been in now for well over two years,” she said.

NEWCASTLE ART GALLERY – New Expansions Opened

Locals are being invited to have a first look at the multi-million-dollar Newcastle Art Gallery upgrades.

Newcastle Council says the doubling of exhibition space will attract more tourism and allow curators to show more of the collection.

A recent valuation put the whole collection at $145 million.

Director Lauretta Morton says it’s been a fight to advocate for the region’s biggest gallery.

“It’s really important about getting our collection out because we’ve got the opportunity now to really show a broad cross-section of the collection for the first time,” she said.

“The amount of grant applications, all of the ‘no’s’, ‘you’re regional, you’re metropolitan’, you know, we went through what I like to call some really hard years. And it was a battle,” she said.

The Gallery will be open to the public Friday through Sunday from 10am till 4pm until the whole gallery opens in February.

MEDOWIE HIGH SCHOOL – Sod Turning Marks Start to Construction

 PETER HYSLOP

Premier Chris Minns has visited Port Stephens today turn the first sod on Medowie High School, a project years in the making.

The new school will open its doors to students in Term 1 2027, following a long fight from Port Stephens MP Kate Washington.

She delivered an emotional speech, saying it had taken since 2011 to get it off the ground.

“This has been a fight from the families of Medowie forever,” she said.

“I know that there are people here that thought they were going to be the first cohort in the new school, and that was decades ago.

“My youngest was in my arms when I first started fighting for this school and she’s now 19. So this is an enormous day,” she said.

It will feature 29 modern classrooms, specialist workshops and labs, play and sport facilities, a multipurpose hall and library.

Chris Minns says it’s long overdue.

“This is the first new high school for the Hunter Valley in 25 years and it’s long overdue for one of the fastest growing communities in New South Wales,” he said.

“I think both sides of politics recognise that this school was absolutely essential for a fast growing community a long time ago,” he said.

RENEWABLE ENERGY ZONE INQUIRY – Mayor Says Transition “Unplanned”

 BY PETER HYSLOP

A State Inquiry into Renewable Energy Zones at Singleton today heard from local leaders, energy operators and unions about the impacts on regional communities.

Residents have long raised concerns about traffic impacts and little consultation from major energy operators.

An interim report in August found uncertainty over whether projects will proceed is causing anxiety. The report also flagged concerns about impacts to the agricultural industry.

Muswellbrook Mayor Jeff Drayton says residents want their fair share of economic benefits.

“This new industry will again bring a real risk that Muswellbrook Shire will carry the load without receiving our fair share of gains.

“This is a cycle that needs to stop. If we keep accommodating what needs to be done for the rest of the country to keep the lights on, our community … needs to start seeing the benefits,” he said.

“EnergyCo has only recently had the resources to plan strategically, and it is now trying to catch up in a fast-moving space. This lack of sequencing creates uncertainty for project proponents, councils and communities.

“This has caused unpredictable workloads for staff because of overlapping projects, loss of social licence as residents grow frustrated with repeated consultations, difficulty planning infrastructure to accommodate renewable energy projects [and] pressure on local services to host temporary construction workforces,” he said.

NEW LAMBTON LANDSLIP – Council and Reconstruction Authority At Odds

Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison says the State Reconstruction Authority is participating in efforts to address the New Lambton landslip.

A Lord Mayoral Minute was last night supported at Newcastle Council to write to the Premier calling for the Authority to lead the cleanup.

Residents met with Jodie Harrison this month to raise their concerns. She says she’s relayed them to Recovery Minister Janelle Saffin.

“They are rightly concerned, they are seeking clarity on their futures, they want to know what the status is on their homes.

“Newcastle City Council is leading the work on this, and the Reconstruction Authority is part of the local recovery committee,” she said.

But Newcastle Lord Mayor Ross Kerridge says the State Government needs to step up.

“This is not a job council is used to, we have engaged a person to lead the recovery effort from Council’s point of view and she’s doing a good job.

“But in the overall scheme of things, this is what the Reconstruction Authority was set up to do, so they should be doing it,” he said.
