Cannabis Addiction Trial Seeks Participants

BY IAN CROUCH

A new trial is getting under way in Newcastle to help cannabis addicts kick the habit.

Researchers from Hunter New England Health are looking for 140 people aged between 18 and 65 who use cannabis on average 4 or more times a week to take part in the 13 week trial.

It involves using a revolutionary new oral spray which works in a similar way to nicotine patches to help users combat their cravings.

University of Newcastle Conjoint Associate Professor, Adrian Dunlop announced the trial is taking place at four clinical sites in NSW, including the Newcastle Drug and Alcohol Service based at the Newcastle Community Health Centre.

"The trial will examine the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of the new medication, known as Sativex, for treating cannabis dependent patients in the community", he said.

Those who are interested in joining the confidential trial should contact the Drug and Alcohol Research Unit on 0408 161 016.
