Greens praise Royal Commission

The NSW Greens have praised the Royal Commissions Terms of Reference into child sexual abuse, following complaints about clergy in the Hunter.

The Commission has adopted almost all of the Green's recommendations

The six commissioners, led by judge Peter McClellan, have held their first meeting in Sydney and have recognised the need to consider just and fair compensation for past and future victims of abuse.
Greens MP David Shoebridge says it is now time for all states and territories to work with the Federal Government to ensure every power is given to the commission.

Newcastle University releases Main Round offers

Last night the University of Newcastle released more than 8000 Main Round offers to prospective undergraduate students, who will commence studies next month.
The median ATAR for these offers was standing at around 83.
It is understood there were more than 19,200 applications from students across Australia to the University.
79% of the final offers were made to students from the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid North Coast regions.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Parfitt says this indicates a high level of interest in the University’s programs.

Pearce Resigns

General Manager, Phil Pearce, has announced his shock resignation just 18 months into a 5 year contract, stating it is for personal reasons.
His departure comes at a time when Newcastle City Council is considering drastic measures to combat a ballooning budget deficit that is set to reach 64-million dollars by 2022 if nothing is done.
There are currently plans to possibly cut staff and services, and tear down toilet blocks and park benches in order to save on maintenance costs.
Despite the sudden resignation, the council says it is business as usual, and they will take as much time as is needed to fill the position.
Phil Pearce will vacate the job on the 1st March.
